Got the hickups?

Try some peanut butter as a cure. It’s not the peanut butter itself that works but the difficulty in swallowing it that may help cure your hickups. Eat one heaping teaspoon full and take your time swallowing it – as you chew, use your tongue to get the peanut butter off the roof of your mouth and your teeth. Your breathing pattern will change and therefore may rid you of those misserable hickups!

Get a leg up on storing onions

Want you onion harvest to last longer? Try this: take an old pair of pantyhose, put an onion in the toe and then tie a knot, put in another onion and tie a knot, continue until either the leg is full or you have no more onions. Hang in your basement or someplace fairly cold and dark. 

By storing the onions this way, it keep airflow around the onion and keeps them from touching each other so they don’t rot a quickly.onion storage idea

When you are ready use an onion, starting at the toe of the pantyhose, cut the hose just above the onion without cutting the knot.

Get your mojito

1 heaping T diced strawberrys

1 T torn basil

1 lime with peel on – cut into small chunks

4 oz white zinfandel

splash of lemon-lime soda

Put strawberrys, lime and basil in bottom of a tall glass, push them down a bit so they hold in place. Add ice. Fill glass with white zinfandel and lemon-lime soda. Enjoy!

Note: for those that don’t like the alcohol, use alcohol removed white zinfandel

Great Mashed Taters

2 lbs of yukon gold or baking potatoes, peeled and quartered

2/3 cup milk

3 T butter

1/2 tsp salt (substitute garlic salt for a different flavor)

1/4 tsp ground pepper

Put potatoes in large saucepan with water to cover. Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, until potatoes fall off fork when poked. Drain in colander.  Return hot potatoes (cold potatoes don’t mash, they stick together like glue) to pan and mash with handheld mixer or masher until smooth. Gradually mix in remaining ingredients.

Mix in some cheddar cheese and sliced scallions. OR mix in wasabi paste.

Serve warm.
